HISTORY & HERITAGE

Where Lincoln’s story lived

Menard County holds a singular place in American history. Petersburg was platted in part by a young Abraham Lincoln, and the county landscape is woven with the sites, stories, and people that shaped him. The Lincoln Heritage Trail, New Salem State Historic Site, the Edgar Lee Masters Memorial Museum, and the Historic Marbold Farmstead connect residents and visitors alike to stories stretching from the frontier era to the early twentieth century. This is not heritage preserved behind glass — it’s the ground Lincoln walked and the farmland his neighbors tilled.

Key sites:

  • Lincoln’s New Salem: Reconstructed frontier village where Lincoln lived 1831–1837. State historic site, free admission.
  • Edgar Lee Masters Memorial: Petersburg birthplace museum honoring the Spoon River Anthology poet.
  • Long Nine Museum: Dedicated to the “Long Nine” legislators, including Lincoln, who moved Illinois’ capital to Springfield. Located in Athens.
  • Historic Marbold Farmstead: A preserved early twentieth-century farmstead reflecting Menard County’s agricultural heritage.
  • Lincoln Heritage Trail: Self-guided driving trail connecting key Lincoln sites across central

Illinois.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Room to roam — right outside your door

The Sangamon River is the backbone of outdoor life in Menard County — and it carries history as well as current. The Lincoln Heritage Water Trail, designated in 1965 as Illinois’ first water trail, runs 85 miles from Decatur to Petersburg, tracing a route young Abraham Lincoln paddled in 1831. Today kayakers and canoeists launch from Hurie Park in Petersburg to explore the same unhurried river. For hunting, fishing, hiking, and equestrian trails on a grand scale, Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area offers more than 16,500 acres of premier public land just minutes from the county seat. Menard County also offers access to the Sangamon Valley Bike Trail which includes a 38 mile paved bike and pedestrian route with multiple access points and the north end of the trail near Athens, IL.
